Western States 100 Finish Line

The Win

Rob Krar won the 2014 Western States 100 in 14:53:23. There were a pile of shooters making the same shot. I’d looked at the scenario, and decided there was no point in aiming that way. I found Christina Bauer, Rob’s wife standing next to Race Director Chris Thornley, waiting as Rob’s progress was being announced. Rob entered the field, and Christina began to weep. That was the real picture. Later I discovered myself in frame. Not  my intention, trust me.

Rob Krar wins, I'm looking at his wife.

I’d been shooting black and white portraits since the night before. Now its some color from a different perspective. My Yashicamat 124 twin-lens reflex is the photo terror-weapon of 1954.

The assembled shooters, bloggers and race officials looked up. Bryon Powell of iRunFar literally stopped in his tracks when he saw my camera. The others took notice. I joked “Bryon, I’ve never seen you stopped cold like this before, ever!” Everybody laughed. Disruption takes many forms.

Looking closer at the geometries of Green’s finish prompted me to look up David’s “Oath of the Horatii”. Paydirt! Who says art isn’t based on real life?
